Frank Hochschulz

Senior Manager Process Digitization
Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD)

Presentation
One MES for 10 Research Institutes

Alongside the establishment of the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD) in 2017 we started the project FMD-Digital to migrate 10 research institutes to a common MES. Since 2022 10 out of 11 cleanrooms have migrated, with the last site currently migrating. Our challenges, journey and the lessons learned along the way are presented.

Our approach to adjacent topics like equipment integration, data analysis, ERP and joint manufacturing are also highlighted.

We will share our methods of cooperation, which are adapted to our boundary conditions of not having central decisive power. We will outline our approach to customizations with respect to baseline (all sites) vs. site specifics.

About Frank Hochschulz

Frank Hochschulz studied Physics at the University of Münster and received his PhD in Engineering from the University of Duisburg-Essen. He worked for 5 years with and for Fraunhofer Cleanrooms, leading the development of infrared focal plane arrays (thermal imaging sensors).

In 2018, he joined the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD for its acronym in German). The FMD is a cooperation of the Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics with the Leibniz Institutes FBH and IHP, where Dr. Hochschulz leads the migration to and operation of a joint MES in 10 of the FMD-Institutes.

Within the FMD, 13 research institutes work together under one virtual roof. As a one-stop shop, the FMD combines the scientific excellence, application-oriented technologies and system solutions of all the institutes involved in the cooperation into customer-specific solutions.
